Lot Essay

Alastair Laing has kindly confirmed the attribution suggesting a date of around the 1750s, and citing a drawing in the Léon Michel-Lévy sale of Abraham banishing Hagar and Ishmael which might be a pendant of the present sheet, sold in Paris, 17 June 1925, lot 36. A version of the latter subject, with a François Renaud mark, was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 19 April 1997, lot 155.
