Lot Essay

The sitter wears the same dress and is seated on the same chair as the one depicted by Trinquesse in a drawing sold at Christie's New York, 30 January 1997, lot 187. The sitter in the latter drawing was identified by Jean Cailleux as either Marianne Franmery or Louise-Elizabeth Bain, two of Trinquesse's three favourite models, J. Cailleux, 'The Drawings of Louis-Roland Trinquesse', The Burlington Magazine, CXVI, February 1974, supplement, pp. i-xiv. Cailleux dated the group of drawings showing seated women in voluminous dresses to the 1770s. Other similar drawings were sold at Christie's London, 20 March 1973, lot 124 and exhibited at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, Fantasy and Reality, Drawings from the Sunny Crawford von Bülow Collection, 1995, no. 20.
