Lot Essay

Close in handling to the group of drawings of the Caravane du Sultan à la Mecque drawn by Vien in Rome during the Carnival of 1748, now in the Musée du Petit-Palais, Paris, J.-L. de los Llanos, Fragonard et le dessin français au XVIIIe siècle, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Petit-Palais, 1992, nos. 11-32. This is typical of the sort of studies after the model that were assigned to pupils of the Académie de France. A few years later Fragonard made very similar drawings of bishops, probably done with the same props as Vien used, P. Rosenberg, Fragonard, exhib. cat., Paris, Galerie Nationales du Grand-Palais, 1987, p. 74, figs. 6-7.
