Lot Essay

The attribution was kindly confirmed by Lorenz Eitner on the basis of a photograph. Professor Eitner dates the drawing between 1816 and 1819 and compares it to two drawings of nudes reproduced in G. Bazin, Théodore Géricault, Paris, 1990, IV, nos. 1268-9. He describes the drawing as 'vigorous, hitherto unpublished, which I believe to be by Gericault whose graphic handwriting is evident in the powerful contours of the figure, in the articulations of its muscular body by means of calligraphic hatchings, and in the summary treatment of its hands'.
