Lot Essay

The attribution to Gericault was confirmed by Professor Lorenz Eitner on the basis of a photograph in a letter dated 14 May 2001. Professor Eitner dates the drawing to circa 1820 and points out that a similar drawing of a sleeping dog, possibly even the same dog, was formerly in Maurice Gobin's collection (illustrated in Paris, Galerie Maurice Gobin, Dessins, aquarelles et gouaches par Gericault, 1935, no. 52).
