This drawing was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe on 24 July 1843, according to the register of the Commandes et Acquisitions Royales, and Lami was paid 1,000 francs. It depicts a charity sale organised for the victims of an earthquake that took place in Point-à-Pitre on 8 February 1843. Point-à-Pitre was the capital of the French colony of Guadeloupe.
A drawing with a similar stencilled inventory number, accompanied by the number '428' on the backboard, was sold at Christie's New York, 22 May 1997, lot 41.
