A Chelsea figure of Pantalone
Circa 1755, the decoration perhaps later
Modelled by Joseph Willems after a Meissen original, the bearded man in black skull-cap and flowing black coat, an orange-brown jacket with gilt buttons, pantaloons and socks, and yellow shoes, holding a bag of money in his left hand, on a circular base applied with coloured flowers (slight chip to top of head, his left hand and money bag a restored replacement, the black enamel with some overpainting at front)

Lot Essay

The original model, by J.J. Kändler and P. Reinicke for the Duke of Weissenfels, was derived from an engraving by Joullain after Callot in Riccoboni's 'Histoire du théâtre Italienne', published in Paris in 1727.
