Lot Essay

The graphic source above is Bartoli, op. cit., (Rome 1680), pl. VII. (Reproduced courtesy of the Victoria and Albert Museum Picture Library, London).

In the graphic source, Pluto is gripping Proserpina's hand very firmly and she appears to be surprised. It is probable that it depicts the scene shortly before he carries her off to the underworld, something which appears to have been lost in the process of translation from the printed source to the plate.
