Lot Essay

Masonic imagery (the dividers and tablets) has been combined with imagery typical of early Revolutionary France. The beehive, emblematic of the 'golden age' is coupled with the fasces, the Roman symbol of good government, justice and unity; the Phrygian cap, a popular symbol of liberty (the freeing of a Roman slave would invlove a ceremony in which he was capped), is coupled with laurels, symbolic of victory; a quiver, bow and arrow, emblematic of war, are crossed with a palm frond, emblematic of military victory.
