Lot Essay

The present lot is a part of the service (originally of 437 pieces) which was given by King Augustus III of Poland (Augustus II, Elector of Saxony) to Tsarina Elizabeth to celebrate the marriage of her nephew, Grand Prince Peter Fjodorowitsch, to Sophie-Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst (later Empress Catherine the Great) in 1745. 197 pieces from the service are still in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.

See the écuelle, cover and stand from the same service sold in these Rooms on 29th June 1987, lot 254, the teacup and saucer in our Geneva Rooms on 11th May 1987, lot 184 and the pair of handled beakers and saucers in the Hoffmeister Collection, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg. For illustrations of these beakers and a discussion of the service see Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister (Hamburg, 1999), Vol. II, pp. 520-521, nos. 339-340.
