Modelled by Wenzel Neu, in a black skull-cap and mask, holding his white hat in his left hand, his right hand raised to his ear, in brightly chequered clothes and red shoes, standing before a tree-stump on an oval mound base (letter lacking from right hand)

Lot Essay

This figure is part of a Commedia dell'Arte series which were modelled in 1764-5 before Wenzel Neu returned to Fulda in 1767 and are taken from engravings by Johann B. Probst adapted from drawings by Johann Jacob Schübler and published by Jeremias Wolffs Erben at Augsburg in 1729, pl. 5.
