Lot Essay

Vases of Münchner form were developed at Nymphenburg in 1822 by Friedrich von Gärtner, see Friedrich H. Hoffmann, Geschichte der Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg (Leipzig, 1923), Vol. III, p. 561, fig. 424. The form was adopted by the Royal porcelain factory in Berlin and after 1830 it became the standard vehicle for Royal gifts from the House of Prussia for roughly two decades (between 1829 and 1850 a total of 137 vases of this form are recorded in the account books of the King). For an exhaustive discussion of Berlin Müncher vases see Winfried and Ilse Baer, ...auf Allerhöchsten Befehl..., Königsgeschenke aus der Königlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin - KPM- (Berlin, 1983).
