Lot Essay

After the picture in the Musèe du Louvre, Paris. The Louvre picture, thought to date from Leonardo's second Milanese period (1507-13), was brought to France by the artist himself, and was seen there in the manor house at Cloux by Cardinal Louis of Aragon. Given that provenance, it seems possible that the present copy was acquired for the Barberini collection during the exile in France of the nephews of Maffeo Barberini, Pope Urban VIII (1568-1644), following that Pontiff's death.
