A Satsuma foliate rimmed dish
Early 20th century
painted and gilt with villagers in a rain shower before Mount Fuji -- 8¼in. (21cms) diam, signed 'Thomas. B. Blow', written in katakana, dated, Mount Fuji to base.
See Illustration.

Thomas Blow was an English collector-dealer who was established in Japan by 1906 and was instrumental in supplying the Swiss collector Alfred Bauer with pieces for his collection. It is likely that Blow commissioned this group of ceramics during his residence before the First World War, selling some on his return to England. He was a member of the Red Cross and in all probability helped with the organisation of the famous Red Cross Exhibition of Japanese art in 1915.
