Lot Essay

Thomas Webb designed the obverse and George Mills the reverse, the pattern having been commissioned by James Mudie, a medallist better known for his series of "National Medals" commemorating British victories over the French during the reign of George III. This was a private unofficial proposal for a Crown to replace the then current Pistrucci design.
