Muller entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1831 where he studied under Baron Gros and Léon Coignet. At the age of nineteen, he submitted his first painting to the Salon. Our picture is most likely his entry of 1847 which established his reputation during the July Monarchy and the early years of the Second Empire.
