Lot Essay

Ulisse Caputo spent his formative years in Italy, in the nineteenth century. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Naples under Morelli and Palazzi, eventually quitting school to work for Gaetano Esposito. At the turn of the century, Caputo moved to France, living and painting for the rest of his life between Paris and Provence. Caputo was the recipient of many honors during his lifetime including the gold medal at the 1909 Salon des Artistes Francais and other awards and invitations which enabled him to travel to Venice, Rome, Naples, the two Americas, and Morocco.
