Lot Essay

A saucer-dish from this service is illustrated by A. du Boulay, Christie's Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics, 1984, p.264, fig.5, and sold in these Rooms 11 June 1974. Compare the armorial service, with the same scene at the centre, made for the family of Powell with Cleland in pretence, illustrated by D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p.314, which was ordered by the family in circa 1750.
