JAMES DEAN PRAYER BOOK AND OTHER EPHEMERA
A small book titled 'Prayers Ancient and Modern' given to James Dean in the late 1940s by his Indiana friend and mentor, Dr. James DeWeerd. Dean used the book for awhile, underlined certain sentences in red pencil, glued his highschool basketball photograph to the inside back cover (where it still remains) and then returned the tome to DeWeerd. In 1955, DeWeerd had the sad task of conducting Dean's funeral services which is noted in the included October 7, 1955 newspaper, 'The Summitville Sun.' Also accompanying this lot are two photocopied letters Dean sent to DeWeerd, two thank you cards from Dean's family after his funeral, nineteen black and white stills from Dean's films taken from his personal scrapbook by his friend, Jack Simmons, correspondence from and to the Winslow family (Dean's Indiana relatives), a kernel of corn taken from the Winslow cow barn on the day of Dean's funeral, a marriage pamphlet with Pier pencilled-in three times (likely in Dean's hand as he and Pier Angeli had tentative plans to be married) and three 1950s movie magazines about Dean. In 1957, DeWeerd gave the prayer book to Stewart Stern, screenwriter for "Rebel Without a Cause," as is noted by the inscription on the inside cover reading To Stewart Stern in everlasting friendship Jim DeWeerd Feb 8-1957.
