Lot Essay

The Flying Cloud was built by Donald McKay, East Boston, for Enoch Train in 1851. She was acquired by Grunnell, Mintern & Co., New York. She made the fastest passage New York to San Francisco ever recorded by a sailing ship covering the distance from June 8 to August 31, 1851--a time equalled only by herself on a voyage at a later date and by the Andrew Jackson. She was destroyed by fire at St. John's, New Brunswick, in 1874.
