A FABULOUS DOUBLE-MAGNUM OF PRE-PHYLLOXERA CHATEAU LAFITE, ORIGINALLY FROM THE CELLAR OF THE EARL OF ROSEBERY

Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1865
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
The provenance of this wonderful, rare bottle is well documented. On 31st May 1967, during the infant Wine Department's 2nd year of business, the distinguished cellars of the Earl of Roseberry came under the hammer at Christie's. Amongst other rarities which had been removed from Dalmeny House were 13 double-magnums of Château Lafite 1865. They were originally purchased from Cockburns, Leith and were binned in 1868. The cellar at Dalmeny was described in 1967 as a model of its kind and the wines had lain undisturbed, apart from periodic checks and re-sealing, since original binning. The wine was purchased in 1967 by a collector and re-sold on 25th May 1975 at Sotheby's. The original slip labels from both auctions remain on the bottle. The 1967 catalogue entry described the double-magnums: "corks re-sealed by Berry Bros. in 1932. All with perfect appearance; no ullage". The double magnum remains today in wonderful condition: orginal handblown glass. Wax capsule intact. Level base of neck. Original Christie's slip label and Sotheby's back label.
Further information: 1865 - An unusually early harvest. Magnificent sturdy wines, more consistently reliable, if well cellared, than any other pre-phylloxera vintage.
Tasting note: A bottle of the same provenance was tasted by Michael Broadbent M.W. at the Overton tasting in 1979: "Medium colour, still remarkably red, lively and youthful. The bouquet, initially light, gentle yet rich, developed deep vinosity and held a rich fruitiness for two hours without effort. On the palate medium-dry on entry but with a very dry finish. Fairly full-bodied, amazingly fine flavour, rich and chewy, with perfect balance, tannin and acidity.
