Lot Essay

Although it is unknown when Charles Martin Powell was born, it is known that he started his career as a sailor. Soon he turned to painting, earning great merit during his life for fully reflecting the traditional Dutch style of marine painting.
Powell's first exibition was in 1807 at the Royal Academy, London, where he went on to have twenty-eight more. He also exhibited eleven times at the British Institution, London.
Powell was a self-taught artist, a fact which reflects great credit on him when one considers the beautiful draughtsmanship and professional execution of his pictures. Because he was once a sailor himself, his faithfulness to marine observation is assured. Powell died on May 31, 1844.
