Lot Essay

Henry Moore was a marine painter and watercolorist born in York, England in 1831. He studied under his father, William Moore, at the York School of Design and at the Royal Academy Schools. At first he painted landscapes and rural scenes, which showed Pre-Raphaelite influences, but in about 1857 he turned to marine painting for which he is best known. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution between the years of 1853 and 1895.
Moore has often been described as an imitator of J.C Hook, but although the colors are similiar, his paintings of the sea are quite different in approach from Hook's coastal scenes with figures. Moore was one of the first painters to try and observe accurately the movement and moods of the sea. In his search for accuracy his technique became more fluid, and his colors more impressionistic.
In the 1880's and 1890's Moore was considered one of England's most important artists, and his work was exhibited throughout Europe. Moore died in 1895.
