A Pair Of Dieppe Ship Models In Domed Cases
Anonymous; French, 19th century
The models, one of a 2nd rate ship and an armed cutter in one case, the other of a 3rd rate ship in another case, are both made from boxwood. The hulls are carved and shaped with veneer applied to form the waist and other details. The models are well detailed for such a small scale, including head rails, cannons and cannon ports, companionways, chain plates, ship's boats, capstan, pin and fife rails, among other details. The models are all very well rigged with standing and running rigging, full suits of sails, and all rigging details. The models are displayed on fenced and tiered bases with figures of warriors standing on top of each corner post of the fences.
5½ x 3½ x 4½ in.(14 x 8.9 x 11.5 cm.) and smaller, models in case. (2)
