The Nantucket Lightship is one of the most famous of the lightships which marked the outer shoals of the East Coast of America. There were twelve Nantucket Lightships used during the period of 1854-1983. Of these lightships, the most ill-fated was the eighth, which suffered a broken anchor chain in a gale in 1933, almost run over by the liner S.S. WASHINGTON in 1934, and finally, rammed and sank by the R.M.S. OLYMPIC in 1934. The Nantucket Lightship was the last of the lightships taken out of service by the U.S. Coast Guard.
