A favoured composition amongst the artist's clientele, the main subject is shown reducing sail and heading towards pilot cutter number 3, the latter having just launched her 'punt' which is clearly visible astern. Fulwood will shortly heave to, allowing the small boat to pull alongside in her lee. The open entry port seen at the foot of the mainmast indicates that preperations are well in hand for the reception of a pilot in response to the white bordered Union Flag at the ship's foremast. At the mainmast the signal hoist 2nd distinguishing pendant, 9, 1, 8, 4, signifies Fulwood in Marryat's Code.
Fulwood (1292 tons and 193 feet long) was built at Quebec, Canada, by N.H.Jones in 1853. Proceeding to Liverpool under a Governor's Pass, she was then registered afresh, the new owners being Jones, Palmer and Company of Liverpool, whose house flag is displayed at the mainmast.
After regularly trading to the Far East for many years, she was abandoned on March 19th, 1867, just north of the Azores when homeward bound from Calcutta to Liverpool. Fortunately the crew was rescued by the Gilbert Thompson and safely conveyed to Liverpool.
We are grateful to A. Samuel Davidson for his assistance in preparing this lot.
