Lot Essay

The present painting recalls, in the opposite sense, the upper torso of Maria Salviati in the double portrait of her and her husband, Giovanni delle Bande Nere (1498-1526) by Giovanni Battista Naldini which was executed in 1585, and is now in the Uffizi, Florence, Inv. 1890, no. 2232. The daughter of Lucretia di Medici (daughter of Lorenzo the Magnificent) and Jacopo Salviati, Maria married in 1516. She was the mother of Cosimo I (1519-1574).
