A mandolin sacred airs musical box
by Nicole Frères, No. 43560, playing eight tunes including Abide with Me and Hark the Herald Angels Sing (Gamme No. 2548), with mandolin teeth in groups of up to seven, tune-sheet and case with crossbanded front and lid, the lid inlaid with sphinxes above a frieze of stylised leaves and scrolls, the front with a grotesque head in a shaped cartouche, with internal transfer of Alfred Hays, inscribed in pencil underneath L. Hill Sept 72 -- 26½in. (67cm.) wide, the cylinder 17 3/8in. (44.5cm.), circa 1867
