A Phalibois monkey trio automaton
with female guitarist flanked by a violinist and a cellist, the monkeys with papier-mâché heads, articulated eyes and jaws, on brass-strung ebonised base containing the two-air pullstring cylinder movement and the going-barrel automaton movement with fifteen wooden cams and corresponding brass runners causing the musicians to turn and nod their heads, blink, chatter and move their right arms, in original waistcoats and breeches, the guitarist in dark blue satin dress trimmed with lace and cut-paper decoration, under floral bower and painted glass dome - 21in. (51cm.) high, (dome cracked, one cam disconnected and some movements in need of adjustment), circa 1870
