The bottle covered in a blue enamel, save for the oval panels decorated in slip of differing tones to show a pair of Pekinese dogs on one side and a pair of doves on the reverse, stopper

Cf. a similar group illustrated by Stevens, The Collector's Book of Snuff Bottles, nos. 334-336. The combination of doves and Pekinese became popular during the Daoguang period when the Emperor was particulary partial to the one and his favourite consort to the other. Pairs of creatures symbolise marital harmony.
