AN IMPORTANT LARGE CARVED DINGYAO 'DRAGON' DISH
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

The interior freely carved across the centre with a writhing dragon, the scales naturalistically marked and the head and feet finely outlined, all under an even ivory glaze pooling slightly on the exterior, the rim left unglazed (the exterior with slight scratching)--11¾in. (30cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A similar dish is illustrated on the front cover of the Special Exhibition of Dragon-Motif Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Catalogue, no.6; the same dish was also included in the Special Exhibition of Ting Ware White Porcelains, Catalogue, pl.79. Another similar dish also from the National Palace Museum but with a metal bound rim was included in the Special Exhibition of Song Dynasty Porcelain, Catalogue, pl.32. A third example from the Carl Kempe Collection, now in the Museum of Far Eastern Art, is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol.9, fig.113; cf. also the example illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, Shogakukan Series, vol.12, col.pl.144
