A VERY RARE EARLY MING BLUE AND WHITE LOBED JAR, GUAN
YONGLE

Of lobed octagonal shape, painted on each bow-shaped segment in deep cobalt tones with fruiting branches of peach, pomegranate, crab apple and loquat alternating with mallow flowers, all between a cloud collar border around the shoulder and a band of ruyi-heads divided by lingzhi at the foot, the short neck with a double-line border and cell-pattern band (restored rim chip, hairline)--5¼in. Lot Essay

There appears to be only one other recorded vase of this shape, but painted with chrysanthemum and peony sprays between the fruiting branches, from the C.P. Lin Collection, included in the exhibition Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, 1992, Catalogue, no. 28
