Lot Essay

A comparable dish but with a yang he tang zhi hall mark from the Shanghai Museum, is illustrated in Chugoku Toji Zenshu, vol.21, col.pl.119. Cf. also the related bowl with a blue enamel Yongzheng four-character mark within a double square, from thre E.T. Chow Collection illustrated by Beurdeley and Raindre in Qing Porcelain, fig.146; and the bowl with a blue enamel cai xiu tang zhi hall mark, sold in London, 13 June 1989, lot 379

Although depicting the well known 'millefleurs' pattern, the present example and those cited above are enamelled in the more unusual falangcai or jiacai palette, a different combination from the usual fencai enamels
