AN IMPORTANT DATED WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
DATED XINGHE THIRD YEAR OF THE EASTERN WEI DYNASTY, CORRESPONDING TO AD 541 AND OF THE PERIOD

Standing on a lotus pedestal supported on a tall rectangular base, the long flowing robes falling in folds at either side of the tall mandorla, holding a lotus in the raised right hand and a receptacle in the lowered left hand, wearing a simple necklace and an elaborate head-dress securing a cowl falling over the shoulders, the robes secured with a buckle at the waist, traces of green, red and blue pigment remaining--24¼in. (61.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

The inscription translates loosely as follows:

'On the 25th day of the 10th month of the Xinghe third year of the Great Wei Dynasty, a Buddhist mendicant (bhiksha) appeared to the priests and public advising them to make a Guanyin image for all to worship, [that is] from the Imperial family to the general population'
