In (anon.), The Last Year in China to the Peace of Peking, 1843, pp. 56-60, the author describes his/her visit to the Casa gardens "It is formed out of what was once the gardens of the Dutch and English factories. It is small and in the European style. It afforded, however, no shelter from the midday sun... The want of shade is attributed to the devastations of the typhoons."
