This view can be dated between 1847 and 1855 as it shows the second church of St. Andrew's to the right of the centre. The first church was without a steeple and the second church (completed in the early 1840's) was demolished in 1855 to make way for the present cathedral. The church spire to the right of St. Andrew's is that of the Catholic church which was not completed until 1847.
The principal buildings in this view, from left to right, include the Institution (later known as Raffles Institution), the spire of St. Andrew's Church, the residences of Miss Tayokee Manuk, Thomas Church - the Resident Councillor, Dr. William Montgomerie - the Resident Surgeon, Gaston Dutronquoy's hotel and the Assembly House or Parliament House. The hill behind is Government Hill (later Fort Canning Hill) with Government House. On the right side of the hill is the old Christian cemetery
