The sides moulded with a pair of stemcup-shaped handles below the high shoulder, covered overall with a mottled glaze of rich turquoise and reddish chocolate brown--9¼in. (23.5cm.) high, box, wood stand

Lot Essay

The mottled red and turquoise glaze compares favourably to the base of a 'peacock-feather' glazed vase included in the joint exhibition from the Collections of the Percival David Foundation and C.P. Lin, Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration, Catalogue, no. 151

Vases of this kind are sometimes called denglong zun, lantern vases. Cf. a similar Qianlong robin's-egg-glazed vase in the Musée Guimet, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, the World's Great Collections, 1981, vol. 7, no. 184; and another in the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum, included in Keitokuchin Jiki, pl. 88; and another in the Special Exhibition of of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, Catalogue, no. 93.
