Lot Essay

Cf. a similar pony from the collection of Victor Shaw illustrated by Watt, op. cit., no. 66, where the author relates the carving stylistically to a Yuan pottery horse and rider found in Inner Mongolia, illustrated by Neimenggu Zizhiqu Wenwugongzuodui, Neimenggu Chutu Wenwu Xuanji, p. 141, fig. 182. He also mentions that the motifs with mountains rising out of the sea on the side of the saddle are a rebus for "longevity mountains (in a) sea of blessings"
