A RARE JUNYAO RECTANGULAR NARCISSUS BOWL
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

Of rectangular form with indented corners, resting on four ruyi feet linked by bracket-shaped borders, the flat rim with a raised edge around the steep well with vertical flanges at each corner, covered inside and out with a pale blue glaze draining from the raised areas to reveal the grey body underneath, the flat base dressed with a brown wash, with an incised numeral, jiu (nine) and a ring of nineteen spur-marks (restored crack)--7½in. Lot Essay

Cf. two similar rectangular narcissus bowls of this shape but of slightly smaller size and both incised with the number '10'. The first is illustrated by Hobson and Hetherington, The Art of the Chinese Potter, pl. XXXIII, fig. 1, from the Schiller Collection; the other was included in the Exhibition of Important Chinese Ceramics from the Robert Chang Collection, Christie's London, 1993, Catalogue, no. 8
