Lot Essay

Thomas Allom was trained as an architect. He is, however, better known for his numerous topographical watercolours and book illustrations. He travelled extensively, but there is no evidence that he ever visited China himself. Allom illustrated several books on the country using the sketches of other artists who travelled there, including those of William Alexander, the official draughtsman accompanying the first British Embassy to Peking in 1792
