A VERY RARE YUAN BLUE AND WHITE LARGE BARBED DISH

Painted in brilliant blue tones with a pair of phoenix in flight amidst a lotus blooms encircled by nineteen lotus panels enclosing auspicious emblems alternating with flaming pearls, the rounded cavetto with a peony scroll issuing six blooms, the flared rim with cresting waves, the reverse with a lotus scroll (small chips)--18 1/4in. (46.3cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A closely related barbed dish in The Matsuoka Museum of Art, is illustrated in Selected Masterpieces of Oriental Ceramics, pl. 40, and again in Sekai Toji Zenshu, Shogakukan Series, vol. 13, pl. 218, with a pair of phoenix in flight amid a chrysanthemum scroll encircled by similar lappets and lotus scroll in the well, the rim with a classic scroll border replacing waves.
