A RARE PAIR OF MING-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE WINECUPS
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARKS WITHIN A SQUARE AND OF THE PERIOD

Each deep cup finely pencilled in soft blue tones to the exterior with an arched lotus meander and a lanca character above each of the eight open blooms, the base encircled with a band of ruyi-heads interspersed with almond medallions, all within double line borders--2 5/8in. (6.7cm.) diam., box (2)

Lot Essay

Although this design painted on cups is quite rare in blue and white, several examples in doucai enamels have been published. Cf. one from the K.S. Lo collection in the Hong Kong Musem of Art, included in the exhibition, The Wonder's of the Potter's Palette, 1984, Catalogue, no. 46; a pair from the Bernat Collection in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, Kodansha Series, vol. 11, no. 255; and the last in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain, pl. 95
