The 1960s was an important era for fine jewellery design. A new, eager clientele with no preconceptions about formal jewels encouraged luxury and excitement in the use of fine stones. Van Cleef & Arpels, having steadily established their reputation from the early years of the century, received several lavish and historic Royal commissions for Haute Joaillerie, through which they became renowned for important diamond jewels. This exotic fringed collar reflects this luxury and also shows the important influence of India on the Arpels brothers and on fashion in general during the 1960s. Van Cleef & Arpels set a trend by recreating the deep "bib" necklaces worn by the maharajahs over their tunics
