The text consists of ten dao-qing (verses of songs) written by the artist

Inscribed at the end of the scroll: "In yisi year, the third year of Yongzheng era (1725), I failed the Capital Examination and returned home with depression. I wrote these ten dao-qing to express my melancholy. It has been twelve long years since then, and I have finally passed the examination. But somehow, there is still the same discontent deep inside my mind."
