Intricately carved ivory and horn set into Victorian jewellery were among the many items manufactured by Cantonese workshops for export to the west in the so-called China Trade; while earlier pieces tend to have a much heavier, densely worked filigree, this example, with its more delicate setting, is characteristic of a later tradition
