The Ossipee was built in 1861 in the Portsmouth Navy Yard, New
Hampshire, U.S.A. It was commissioned in 1862, Lt. Comdr. Robert Boyd in command. The ship played an active part during the years of the American Civil War. It later served in the north Pacific protecting American interests along the coasts of Mexico and Central America, followed by a period in the North Atlantic. In 1884, the ship departed for the Far East and served on the Asiatic station until returning to New York on 15 February 1887. She was eventually sold in 1891 to Herbert H. Ives. For a detailed history of the ship see The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships
