AN EARTHENWARE VASE, MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED RYOZAN HITSU, SEALED RYO and bearing Shimazu mon, of ovoid form with tapered shoulder, waisted neck and flared mouth ending in a rolled lip, painted in colored enamels and gilt with two large rectangular panels of figures enjoying the riverside under cherry trees and of a pair of pheasants, water and a stand of lush flowers and grasses, all between patterned borders with backgrounds of rust red, the shoulders decorated with panels of brocade ornament against a rust ground, the lip also rust-colored with traces of gilt--7¼in. high
