Lot Essay

At the height of the Grand Tour, it was common for fragmentary ancient marbles to be restored with new heads and limbs, as collectors at that time favored "complete" statuary for their gardens and estates. This 19th century head was once attached to an ancient Roman marble torso, sold 18 December 1996 at Christie's Park Avenue, lot 135.
