Lot Essay

In Pliny's description of the art of mosaics, he refers to the artistry of Sosus of Pergamon, an inventor whose work included a mosaic depicting doves surrounding a basin. A well-known copy of this image was found at Hadrian's villa near Tivoli and now resides at the Capitoline Museum in Rome. (Cf. O. Seyffert The Dictionary of Classical Mythology, Religion, Literature and Art Gramercy Books, 1995, pp. 398-399)
