Lot Essay

Trajan's 100-foot tall column was erected to commemorate the Dacian Wars, depicting over 2500 figures engaged in various activities spiralling up the length of the monument's 700-foot frieze. (Cf. J. Boardman et al, The Roman World Oxford University Press, 1988, pp. 383-385)
